on a

sudo DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive apt-get -y install lava -t stretch-backports

Though as I comment we would like some distance between whatever arrives in
backports and our tool so that an install by a user of our system has
more stability - though I understand you'd like to prioritize up-to-dateness.
